Anne Schellenberg (Funk)

October 5, 1925 - March 7, 2022

Tribute

Our beloved Sister, Mom, Grandma, and Great-grandma was carried away peacefully on March 7th after a long and well-lived life. Anne was born in Blumenort, Saskatchewan, the eldest daughter and first Canadian-born child of John and Elise Funk. The Funks moved to Elm Creek, Manitoba, where Anne left school after grade 8 to help her mother with the large family and farm chores. But she also pursued volunteer opportunities in Washington DC, then completed high school and teaching training. Anne and her husband Abe raised 4 daughters in Winnipeg, where she was very active in her church community of Elmwood MB Church and pursued her talents for singing, sewing, gardening, crafting, and Scrabble playing. Above all, Anne was known for her gracious and caring hospitality, opening her home not just to immediate family and friends, but also to extended family and those in need of friendship and shelter. Moving to Abbotsford in 1991, Anne and Abe enjoyed wonderful years in their retirement community and with their local grandchildren. After Abe’s death in 1999, Anne was able to travel more; her visits with her Manitoba family and her Toronto grandkids were highlights for all. She was proud also of her rediscovered athletic skills, becoming a passionate bowler and recreational golfer. As Anne’s health began to fail, she was well-supported by the staffs of Primrose Gardens and Terrace East, Abbotsford, and for the last 5 years, the Belvedere Care Centre, Coquitlam. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these compassionate caregivers.

Anne is predeceased by her husband Abe, sister Betty, brothers John and Henry, sister-in-law Ella, and brothers-in-law Jake and Albert. She leaves behind daughters Betty (Christian), Ruth, Linda (Murray), and Kathie (Dave); grandchildren Carlee, Thomas, Andrew, Michael (Megan), Samuel (Lynn), Philippa (James), Holly, Luc, and Harry; and her newborn great-grandson Jamieson. She is also survived by her siblings and in-laws Tina, Frank (Martha), (Hedy), Margaret, Mary (Hermann), and Neil (Laura).

A celebration of life will take place at Central Heights MB Church in Abbotsford at 11 a.m. Monday, March 21; facemasks mandatory. Livestreaming of the memorial service will be available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJVNCyb6D3c&authuser=0
