Barbara Gabrielle Zinn

April 20, 1958 - September 22, 2018

Tribute

Devoted mother and wife, cherished daughter, sister, caregiver and friend.

Suddenly, tragically and unpredictably, Barbara Gabrielle Zinn, 60, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018.  She was surrounded by family, who shared memories and stories before saying goodbye and auf wiedersehen as Barbara went home to Jesus.

Barbara was born on April 20, 1958 and grew up in Vancouver, B.C., with her mother Margaret {deceased}, her younger brother Peter and her stepfather Mihaly {deceased}.  From an early age, she had a nurturing personality and a loving smile.  Her caring nature led her to the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing. Children were her passion and she soon started working at Children’s Hospital, as well as the pediatric unit at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital and the Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children.

While attending the young adults group at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Barbara met Paul Zinn and the two fell in love. They got married the day before her birthday in 1980. Eight years later, she gave birth to their son, Jacob, followed by the birth of their daughter, Carleigh, four years after.

“We have a one in a million family,” Barbara said, “because we were blessed with both a boy and a girl.”

Barbara was one of the first nurses in an East Vancouver Health Unit pilot project to provide overnight home nursing care for children of single parents.  She continued to provide a variety of home nursing services for children while working for ParaMed and Bayshore, exceeding her responsibilities by personally enhancing the lives of her many clients and their families.

She worked long nights and would come home to sleep for an hour before getting her own children ready for school. Despite her active schedule, she was extremely organized, and thoughtful.  She would buy Christmas and birthday presents months, even years in advance, for her family and others.  She was always prepared to make others happy, as she put everyone before herself.

She will forever be fondly remembered by her husband Paul, children Jacob and Carleigh, and countless relatives, friends, colleagues and client families, for her dedication to helping others and warming their hearts. Barbara was love.

A memorial service will be held at Peace Portal Alliance Church, 15128 27b Ave, Surrey BC on Saturday, November 17th at 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to World Vision at https://donate.worldvision.ca/products/memory or BC Children’s Hospital Foundation at https://secure.bcchf.ca/donate/donation-New.cfm?Tribute=Yes or charity of your choice.

I am thankful for all the love that Barbara showed me after I became part of the family through marrying her little brother. Her generosity and thoughtfulness were legendary and will remain examples close to both our hearts as Peter and I keep adjusting to life without her. Enjoy Jesus’ overflowing love, Barbara…we will be so happy to see you again one day with Him.

My heart is broken!😢

From: Marjorie Ratel
Relation: Life long nursing friend

Hello Paul and family,

What amazing memories I have with your wife and mom. We spent 3 years together on 3rd floor of the VGH School of Nursing. As family’s were built, we would meet around Christmas to catch up on family news. I remember Barb always had the cutest giggle and smiling was as natural as breathing. She loved life immensely and fulfilled the divine purpose our Lord built into her heart. When she entered Glory, her mom and step-dad and grandparents and ancestors she had never met before met her on her arrival. What a reunion that was! Cause the most important there was Jesus, smiling on Barb.
Kids, life is so short and sooo precious. Live out her legacy in your own lives. That will be the greatest gift you could give your mom. And one day, you’ll be greeted at the gate by your mom.

Dear Barbara, your gentle smiles and kind heart will always in my heart. May God comfort your family. Thanks for your orientation & encouragement to me when I’m new to Bayshore. Thank you.
