Cedric Basil Lloyd Hackett
July 29, 1928 - June 8, 2025
Tribute
It is with love and extreme sorrow that we announce the death of Cedric Hackett; our dad, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Cedric passed away in his sleep at the age of 96. He was loved and respected by many and leaves behind brother Denny, children Terry (Sue), Caroline (Larry), Dion (Cindy); grandchildren Jane (Kevin), Alison (Jordan), Shelley (Darcy), Steve, Olivia (Dustin), Darrell (Colleen), Heather (Jordan) and Liam and great-granddaughters Ursa, Emilia and Rosie. Cedric was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Alice Hackett, wife Mary (Maymie) in 2016, and son Rex in 1971.
Dad was born in Singapore, Malaya (now Malaysia) on July 29, 1928. His father, Gerald, was born in Allahabad, India and his mother, Alice, was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Dad’s early years were spent growing up in pre-war Singapore. After the Japanese Invasion of Singapore in February of 1942, the family (Gerald & Alice, Cedric and Denny) was interned in the Changi jail and Sime Road Internment Camp until the end of WW2. After the war the family immigrated to Canada through White Rock, B.C. The day they arrived it was snowing – quite a shock to the system for a kid from the tropics!
In April 1951 Dad attended a military ball where he met Mary and they were engaged five weeks later. On November 2, 1951 they were married. While raising their children they lived in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Langley. Once they became empty nesters they lived and worked in Saudi Arabia.
In retirement Dad and Mum lived in Langley and traveled extensively overseas. Dad was involved in Probus and volunteered for the Red Cross for Disaster Response & Emergency Preparedness. He was a talented artist and produced many sketches and painting from his time in Singapore and after. We could also count on scenic Christmas cards.
After Mum’s death in 2016, Dad moved into an apartment for several years before moving into Harrison Pointe (assisted living) and finally Jackman Manor (long term care).
Dad was a kind, thoughtful man, always a gentleman, always willing to join in on an adventure, sporting a smile that could light up a room. He was a friend and mentor to many and he will be forever loved and missed.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Jackman Manor in Aldergrove B.C. for the love and care that they provided Dad for his final 2 years. Their time, patience and compassion were greatly appreciated.
No service by request but a small family gathering at the graveside will be held at a later date.
Donations, if desired, may be made to Jackman Manor or a charity of your choice.
