Clifford Raymond Unger

May 19, 1938 - June 22, 2026

Tribute

Clifford Raymond Unger (“Cliff”), 88, of Abbotsford, British Columbia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, June 22, 2026.  Born on May 19, 1938, in Rosthern, Saskatchewan to Nettie (Angenetta) and George (Gerhardt). Cliff grew up in the Sumas Prairie area of Abbotsford and graduated from Abbotsford Secondary School in 1956. He went on to work as a Constable for the Edmonton Police Department and later at the Delta Police Department where he retired as a Staff Sergeant and helped establish the Delta Police Pipe Band.

Cliff was known for his unwavering dedication to family, a love of music, his Christian faith, and a quiet humor and generosity that touched everyone who knew him. He loved playing the bag pipes and chanter, picking berries in the summertime, a good muscle car and Harley, and telling old stories.

Cliff is survived by his wife Anita Unger; his sons Stephen and David and their spouses Monica and Matt; his three granddaughters Saraphina (Angus), Kolbe (Daniel), and Isabelle; and his brother Pete. He was preceded in death by his middle son Douglas.

A memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mennonite Central Committee, where he and his wife have dedicated many hours of volunteer work ( https://mcc.org/get-involved/giving ).

Dear Monica and Stephen,

What a wonderful tribute to your father- in – law/ father. He sounds like a remarkable human who used his gifts abundantly. Please accept my prayers for strength and courage as you all navigated this time of grieving.

Thinking about the family at this time, Uncle Cliff was a wonderful, gentle man. RIP Uncle Cliff

From: Val Lea
Relation: He was my Uncle

A lovely tribute for a lovely man. My favourite memories are when Uncle Cliff would stop into our home in Delta to have lunch with my mom (his sister Grace). He always looked so imposing in his full police uniform, about ten feet tall, but he was his usual caring self. I like to think of him and mom, driving around to see their old haunts in Abbotsford and taking her out for coffee. She’ll be so happy to see him.

From: Les Friesen
Relation: Co-volunteer at the MCC thrift store.

Cliff and I enjoyed swapping stories of our shared high school years. Now, too late, I realize we also had in common being born in Rosthern. We’ll meet again!
