David (Jake) John O'Brien

May 14, 1951 - September 22, 2020

Tribute

It is with great sadness that the family of David John O’Brien (Jake) announce his passing on Tuesday, September 22 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He will be sadly missed by sisters Sharon Taylor (Gordon) and Janice Walsh, nieces and nephews: Becky (Ashley) & family; Vince, Karen, Ryan (Kristen) & families, Derek, Clinton (Sharina), Vanessa (Ryan) & family, and many friends. David was predeceased by his parents John & Ila O’Brien and sisters Janine (Boyden) and Trisha (Karlson). David was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, second of 5 children, moving to Abbotsford with his family when he was in grade 9. Following graduation from Abbotsford Senior Secondary David (Jake) left for Fort St. John looking for teamster jobs in the oil fields. He made many lifetime friends during his time up north. Years later he moved back to the Fraser Valley and started a job with A1 Countertops. He also enjoyed being a carpenter’s helper and building homes. In 2005 he started a job with Lim Cladding. One of his proud accomplishments was being involved in applying new metal roofing on the building at Sajak Ranch, north of Mission, for challenged youth. He had a big heart and helping others, especially those in need, was a big part of who Jake was. Jake’s love and loyalty for his friends was one of his outstanding qualities. He would light up a room with smiles and his infectious laugh! David’s health was failing for several years. His positive attitude and ready smile always found the “silver lining” in life. His favourite line was “it’s all good”.  David (Jake) we will miss you always. All our love, from your family and friends.

I am an old high school friend of Dave’s. When Dave and I graduated from high school we moved into the town and country apartments in Abbotsford for an extended period of time. I have very fond memories of the good times we spent together. Although I had not seen Dave in a number of years I think of him often. RIP Dave

Jake really was a great guy to be with. He had such a great sense of humour and we loved laughing at all his crazy comments. There was never a dull moment. He was also warm and caring and made others around him feel good. We’ll miss you Jake.
