De Etta Cecelia Smith

February 13, 1932 - February 28, 2018

Tribute

With great sadness the family of De Etta Cecelia Smith announces her passing. De Etta was 86 years old and lived all her life in the Fraser Valley.  She was the last surviving child of George Wesley Croaker and De Etta Alva Stolz.  De Etta was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas Alexander, and siblings Edna, Lucella, Dorothy, Henry, Ernie and Louis.  She was extremely proud of her children: Trudy (Karl), Joyce, Janet (Charlie) and Ron (Blanche) as well as grandchildren Hayley, Dr. Nicholas, Dr. Carmen, Eve, Brea, Vass and great grandchildren Joshua, Thomas, Alice, Isaac, Talia, Kristen, Jessie, Faith, Willow, Alexandria and Deighton.

Mom was a very kind, loving and generous person who welcomed many a relative into her home for scrumptious meals. De Etta was an amazing gardener, enjoyed sewing, caring for her home and family and ably managing kids, house and farm animals during Dad’s work commitments away from home.  Mom and Dad provided a wonderful life for their children on the Mt. Lehman hobby farm.  Both had a special interest in Canadian wildlife and local history.  We miss them tremendously.

Tom and De Etta’s ashes will be joined together and laid to rest in Hazelwood Cemetery, Veteran’s Section, to honour Dad’s military service during World War II.  A private graveside gathering will be held at a later date.

My mother in law was a very special person to me. From the first day that I meant her, I felt welcomed and accepted. Myself being a “foodie”, there are fond memories of her wonderful cooking and hospitality. Mom had a good sense of humour and accepted everyone as they were. She truly was a good person. I loved her like my own mother and she will be greatly missed.

Dear Trudy, Joyce, Janet and Ron,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved mother.
Auntie Vi was always very kind and generous to me; such a good person.
On my seventh birthday she gave me my first book. A Red Ryder comic book that has special significance for me. I used it to learn to read.
May you find comfort in those around you.

Relation: My mother-in-law

My mother-in-law and I had our differences but no one could ever doubt her love for, and her commitment to, her family. There is something that I wish I would have said to her while she was still with us: “Thank you for the way you brought up your daughter who became my wife and the mother of my children. You did a wonderful job. I will be forever grateful.”

Relation: Aunt

I think I will always remember Auntie Vi for her great outlook on life ,always had a positive attitude and especially enjoyed time visiting with people. Her joy of life always centered around her family .
