Donald (Roy) Royden Morice
September 22, 1922 - August 27, 2025
Tribute
Roy Morice passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2025, twenty-six days shy of his 103rd birthday. Born in Biggar, SK, he spent many of his years in Calgary before eventually settling in Abbotsford, BC.
He was a man who wore many hats over his lifetime: industrial safety officer, police-force volunteer, agriculture advocate, serving brother of St. John’s Ambulance, community service extraordinaire. He was the safety inspector during the construction of the Calgary Tower. In fact, he was an original “Captain Safety”, through collaborations with the Abbotsford police department on community speed watch and local traffic safety issues, as well as through his work with the Workers Compensation Board of BC. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of Abbotsford for his outstanding and selfless service to the community. These are just a few of his accolades and achievements.
Roy was a farmer, living a dying way of life in Abbotsford. Raising cattle and fixing tractors were just some of his passions.
He was a talented singer and musician, playing alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet, as well as the banjo. His voice was velvety and smooth with his musical pride and joy being his album “Golden West Sax”.
Roy was predeceased by his sisters Barbara and Joyce, and brother Keith. He is survived by his wife Gudrun, sons Wayne, Barry (Megan) and Ryan, brother Verne (Dorothy), four grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Condolences to the entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will always remember Grandpa on his tractor, feeding big fellow oats with him, the Christmas’s and holidays spent together. Memories I will always cherish.

Sue and I send our condolences to the Morice clan during a difficult time in the cycle of life as we loose a loved one or friend, but memories linger on.
Sue’s only memory of Royden were when we were hosting a Wine Tasting event out in Abbotsford years ago and Roy and company were playing in the mall. I think the sound of his horn could be heard at the other end of the mall where we were. He stopped by our booth for or a minute to have a little chat with us, and tried to bait me into speaking Polish.
I met Roy back in High School when Wayne and I were starting our venture into music. Always a friendly man, very outgoing and he always started the conversation off with a bit of Polish or Ukrainian. I had no idea what he was speaking but the smile on his face said it all. Of course, he spoke English but for some reason whenever we met he started off with the mother tongue. Maybe he was hoping I had learned a word or two from our previous meetings, never did. But he kept trying.
A long life lived with probably an even longer list of friends. Rest in peace.
