Donald Robert Stevenson
November 6, 1923 - March 17, 2019
Tribute
Our loving Dad passed away peacefully on Sunday at the age of 95 with family members by his side. Dad was born on November 6, 1923 in Kingston, Ontario. At the tender young age of 18 he travelled with four comrades to Ottawa where he joined the RCAF on July 1, 1942. He was posted to #7 Bombing and Gunnery Station at Paulson, MB and rose to the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1. Thankfully Dad was never posted overseas. In the summer of 1971 the Stevenson’s left Manitoba and took up residence on Brundige Ave. in Abbotsford. Because it was such a great home filled with fabulous memories, Dad remained there until he chose to relocate to Hallmark on the Park assisted living in May, Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Doreen (2012), sister Ginger Bontje (2018), and son-in-law Fraser Ross (1999). Left to celebrate his life are his 7 children Brian, Harold (Corrie), Barbara (Paul), Bruce, Heather (Rob), James (Teresa), and Jennifer (Shayne), 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandsons. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses, doctors and care givers on Baker 2 at ARHCC. The care and respect given to Dad during the last two weeks of his life gave all of us great comfort. We will never forget the kindness that was provided to him. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 23 at St. Matthews Anglican Church, 2010 Guilford Dr., Abbotsford at 11:00 AM. Refreshments to follow. Don’t wear black, wear blue, Don’s favourite color. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. A few of Dad’s favorites were The Canadian Red Cross Society, St. Matthews Anglican Church, Abbotsford Community Services and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

From: Linda J Burton
Relation: School visit. Church.
We remember Don’s typical smile, and yes, his wearing blue. Linda first encountered him when she was teaching at Dasmesh Punjabi School and he had come in his Legion uniform to mark Remembrance Day with the students. From there we discovered a mutual link — I had once lived in Beamsville, Ontario and he had once unexpectedly landed in a plane in a field there. After I started attending St Matthew’s, it was always a pleasure to see Don arrive and to chat at coffee time. I once attended a Probus meeting at his encouragement. We wish the family equally happy memories to sustain you as you work through the emotions of this time of his leaving us all. The photo is of Don (in blue, naturally) walking into the church hall in February 2017 for a parish meeting. Sincerely, Linda and Bob Burton
