Douglas Elrick

September 30, 1944 - September 25, 2020

Tribute

It is with a heavy heart we mourn the passing of Doug Elrick, who lost his battle with cancer after his initial diagnosis 16 months ago.

In his earlier years Doug spent his summers on the warm white sandy beaches of Winnipeg, and winters playing hockey on the cold outdoor rinks.  As a young man he enjoyed volunteering as a coach for little league baseball and hockey.  Always a sports fan, he never passed up an opportunity to go to an NHL game, and spent many nights in the bleachers watching the blue bombers with his wife.

Always a devoted husband and father, dad would never fail to be there for his children.  From the early days of backyard skating rinks and 5am hockey practices, to soccer games and even the occasional trip to an emergency room to stitch up dumb young mistakes, nothing was too much to ask for his children.  I fondly remember the trips we took as children, walking with my father as a young boy in airports, held up to the windows to watch all the big planes lifting towards the sky.

Apart from his family, travel, airports and airplanes were his life’s loves.  He started his career at Air Canada as a young clerk in Winnipeg, eventually transferring to Montreal only to retire with 38 years of service as Manager of Pension Programs in Vancouver.

He enjoyed his time at Air Canada.  From the many stories we heard over the years, I recall his regular business trips to the UK as one of his more memorable ones.  Helping others at work with their problems, be it personal, pension, insurance, etc, always gave him pride and satisfaction in the work he did.

No time was wasted in retirement.  He and our mom travelled the world, be it Holland, Iceland, Australia/New Zealand, or the Atlantic shores off our own beautiful coastline.  Dad enjoyed travelling as much as the search for the next destination, always looking for the best bargain he could find.

He leaves behind his brother and sister, beloved wife Bernice of 48 years, their daughter and two sons, as well as two grandchildren.  Although taken from us too soon, we take comfort that his passing was quiet, peaceful and without pain.  Many thanks to the care and compassion he received from the staff at both Chilliwack General Hospital, and Vancouver General Hospital.

Dad, you will be greatly missed.  Until we meet again,

Your loving son and family.

Dear Ryan and Family;

My sincerest condolences on Doug’s passing. I first came to know Doug during the 2003 CCAA. From that day on I was continuously learning from him and he was always a great source of support and guidance during the time the retiree group helped the Corporation continue in operation and provide pensions. It was always interesting pretty much on a bi-annual basis to catch up to his many travels, as well as the status of the pension plan. On a personal basis he was a pillar in the pension surveillance and he will be greatly missed. Sincerely: Bruce Aubin, Chairman Emeritus Air Canada Pionairs Pension and Benefits Committee.

My sincere condolences to the Elrick family I always enjoyed talking with your dad at
Air canada . He sure was a wealth of knowledge about pension plans.
We used to bump into each other often at Dollard arena. We also enjoyed talking to each other when we would meet on his nitely walks with your mom around Westminster park.. he enjoyed his peaceful walks around DDO. Come to think of it he really was a walker as he we always met during daily lunch walks around the ac base and shared a little info together. He was a real pleasure to talk with.
God bless Doug Waugh
