Elfrieda Toews (Goossen)
November 26, 1937 - January 12, 2025
Tribute
Elfrieda was a vibrant, classy, elegant, loving, hard-working and active lady in the Lower Mainland for 70 of her 87 years. The first 14 were spent in Mexico, and the last 3 were spent impaired with increasing dementia that changed her life dramatically.
Born in Cuauhtemoc, Mexico (near Chihuahua), to Heinrich and Maria Goossen, Elfrieda was part of a family that included her parents, older sister Hilda and younger brother Fred. After suddenly losing their father to illness in 1941 when Elfrieda was only 3, her mother and siblings remained in Mexico for 11 more years until moving to Yarrow in 1952.
In June of 1957, she became the wife to George John Toews, of Yarrow (and then Abbotsford) for 52 years. Together, they had 3 children, 7 grandchildren (and subsequently 9 great-grandchildren). George passed away from stomach cancer in 2014.
Elfrieda’s passions were her Lord Jesus, her family, grandchildren, shopping, golfing and loving others. She often showed this love through her ministries of prayer, hospitality, teaching, serving in various capacities at church and going on missions trips. She was talented in art, designing, sewing and being extremely generous. She also loved traveling.
A memorial service will be held for her on Saturday, January 18 at 10:30 am at Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church located at 2950 Blue Jay Rd in Abbotsford. The service will also be live-streamed and can be accessed via this link: http://live.immanuelonline.ca/ or https://youtube.com/live/-

My deepest condolences to the family, may the Lord comfort you and give you peace.
I came to know Elfrieda through church and got closer to her when we used to carpool to go to church to take Winsome, a school of Ministry in our church. We used to get together to watch the Windword service Sunday mornings, at my place, when due to the restrictions of the pandemic, we couldn’t meet in the church building.
We went for many walks to many places and enjoyed many shopping trips with her. She was an amazing lady, a delight to be around her and learning from her. She was a blessing to me and so many others around her. It is a joy to know that she is rejoicing now in heaven with Jesus and her dear family that went ahead of her. Much love to all the family.
