Eu Jeong Hong
March 21, 1931 - June 25, 2025
Tribute
Hong Eu Jeong passed away peacefully at Inglewood Care Centre, West Vancouver, BC on Wednesday 25 th June 2025.
Eu Jeong (meaning fine wool) was born on 21st March 1931, third child of Hong Kim Boon and Ong Cheng Siew in Sitiawan, Federation of Malaya. She was preceded in death by five siblings Eu Ngoh, Kok Chiong, Eu Cheog, Kok Cho, and Kok Thim, and survived by sisters Eu See, Eu Kiau, Eu Kwan, and Eu Leng. Everyone who met Eu Jeong would agree that she lived up to her name – a rare commodity of great worth.
Eu Jeong is survived by her husband of 67 years Mark Mak Kim Hong, her children Juliana (Mike), Elaine (Lai Sin), and Leslie (Anne), her grandchildren Jenna (James), Toni (Mark), Adrian, and Fiona, and her great grandsons Tate, Bodhi, and Jonas.
While she found success in various jobs including assistant superintendent at Treacher Methodist Girls School (Taiping), teacher at Wesley Methodist Kindergarten (Alor Setar), and health care aide (North Vancouver), her first love was children. In addition to raising her own, over the years she became a favourite aunt to many nieces and nephews, and trusted adult to countless other young people. Eu Jeong found a lot of joy volunteering with various organizations including one in Kuala Lumpur working with children with special needs.
An extrovert, Eu Jeong made friends easily and she diligently kept in touch with them. Getting together with her invariably involved food, mostly homemade Malaysian Nonya-inspired dishes which she conjured up without fuss in her kitchen. She also loved trying out restaurants, especially breakfast joints serving pancakes.
Eu Jeong was handy with needle and thread, especially when indulging in her lifelong fondness for quilting. Her prodigious output over eight decades secures her legacy for keeping family and friends warm around the globe! She was also very fond of gardening, spending many happy hours in her various gardens, patios and balconies cultivating a riot of colour from spring to fall. Latterly she was particularly fond of pansies, begonias, and petunias, always astonished that “God’s colourful flowers never clash”.
A Service of Celebration is being planned for the fall at North Shore Alliance Church.
