George Gerhard Duerksen
November 3, 1930 - April 17, 2025
Tribute
Born in Arnaud, Manitoba, George and his family moved to Abbotsford, BC in 1936. He grew up in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, surrounded by family and the Mennonite community.
George was a teacher for 28 years, teaching in Savona, Kamloops and as a principal in Cranbrook, BC. He retired from teaching and moved to Abbotsford in 1988, where he had another career working as a family counsellor, finally retiring in his 80’s. He volunteered at the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Abbotsford, taking time to share his culture and history with the public.
George is remembered as a kind and generous man, with a strong faith in God and love for people. He passed away peacefully at home in Abbotsford with Margaret at his side; they were married almost 70 years.
George is survived by his wife Margaret (nee Loewen); his daughters Cathleen [Brent] Murphy and Susan [Roger] Grose; his son Dave [Pearl Dawn], and 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

I worked with George at the Family Guidance Program, Abbotsford Community Services for many years. George has been a very helpful member of our team . . . a mentor to those of us who were younger. He was very respectful of our limitations . . . he gently guided us through challenges we shared with him . . . he was extremely kind in all his dealings with us. I have appreciated knowing George. Attached is a photo that expresses my heartfelt thanks to God for George’s faithful witness.
