Harry Schmidt

August 24, 1925 - July 4, 2025

Tribute

On July 4, 2025 Harry Schmidt, in his 99 th year, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Edna and his three children, Arla (Longhurst) (Gary), Arden (Noreen) and Cheryl (Ford) (Douglas). Grandchildren; Jennifer, Nicole (Ryan), Madison and Emma. Great grandchildren Lily and Jack. Harry is predeceased by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. He is the last of his generation to pass.

Harry’s parents Nikolai and Dorthea emigrated from Russia in the 1920’s and settled on a farm near Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. Harry was born and raised on the family dairy farm. He became a Christian in his teenage years and later attended Bible School in Dalmeny. Harry had a passion for the open road and continued to drive truck until he was 85 years old. This passion was born when, as a young man, Harry and a friend took a road trip on their motorcycles.  They rode their motorcycles through the United States and Southern Ontario to visit Harry’s siblings. Harry met Edna at a Youth for Christ meeting in Saskatoon. They were married in 1953 and began raising a family in Saskatoon where Harry had a trucking business. After a brief time in Coleville, Saskatchewan, the family moved to British Columbia in the 1970’s. Settling in the Fraser Valley, Harry continued to operate his trucking business and raised his family.

On August 7 at 11 AM, a celebration of life will be held at Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, in the Fellowship Room, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, B.C.
