Helen Grace Lescheid (Loewen)

July 11, 1936 - November 1, 2020

Helen (Grace) Lescheid was born in Neuendorf, Ukraine on July 11, 1936. Her family fled Ukraine during World War II.  Her father was killed while on active duty and Helen and her mother and three siblings became refugees.  After the war, the family spent three years in Austria, then one year in Germany.  When Helen was 13 the family emigrated to Canada.  After graduating from high school Helen received a diploma from Biercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan and a nursing diploma from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing.  In 1962 Helen married Bill Lescheid.  After a missionary term of four years in Kenya, East Africa, the couple with their five children settled in Abbotsford, BC  where Bill taught high school and Helen nursed part time.  As a professional writer Helen has published in many magazines and has written five books: Lead Kindly Light, Treasures of Darkness, To Stand on Mountains, Prayer: When Answers Aren’t Enough and Wonder.  Through all of life’s challenges Helen has experienced God’s faithfulness and grace.  To remind herself of this she took on the name Grace, meaning “Great Riches At Christ’s Expense”.  She shares these riches in her books and articles.  Helen is survived by her five children and eight grandchildren: Esther Beatty (Geoff), Miriam, Nathan, Philip; David Lescheid (Petra); Elizabeth Lescheid (Matthew);  Catherine Ojala (Eric), Kaari, Erynn; Jonathan Lescheid (Cheryl), Evangeline, Declan, Simon; as well as her sister Katie Loewen;  and in-laws Gary Ferngren and Carol Loewen.  Her funeral will be held Thursday, November 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road Abbotsford.

From: Connie Baxter
Relation: friend

I have known Helen for about 35 years. The one thing that stands out (beside her love for the Lord) was her deep love and pride for her children. You were such a blessing to her. My deepest condolences to you (her children, grandchildren and sister). May the thought of her incredible joy when she met her Lord and Savior face-to-face bring you peace and comfort. Hugs and prayers for each of you.

From: Ron Davidson
Relation: Helen was my cousin.

My sincere condolences to all of Helen’s family. Helen’s grandmother, Helena Tschetter Loewen was my aunt as my mother was Anna Tschetter Davidson. I met Helen and greatly admired her as a lady, a historian, and a writer.

From: Janice Friesen (Martens)
Relation: Through her writing

Katie, I am so sorry that you lost your sister. She has been an inspiration to me through her writings. May God comfort you as your mourn and remember her.

From: James Coggins
Relation: I was privileged to call her my friend.

As an editor with the MB Herald, I received and published quite a few of Helen’s articles. They were always thoughtful, important, relevant, and spiritually sound. They were very always well written and needed little editing. As I got to know Helen, I found she was a very gracious lady and a woman of deep faith, gentle, humble, and kind. She has endured much trouble in her life, and she is now resting in her Father’s love. I am sure she is hearing Him say, “Well done!”
