Jean Victoria Cunningham (Church)

February 25, 1935 - December 1, 2020

Tribute

With sadness we announce the passing of Jean on December 1, 2020 at the age of 85 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Jean is survived by Sterling, her loving husband of 64 Years; three daughters: Cathy (Tom), Krista (Paul), and Lisa (Robert); three grandchildren: Erin (Jordan), Stuart (Rebecca), and Leighann; and four great-grandchildren: Madison, Everleigh, Bowen and Collins. Jean was an only child, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Cyril and Lillian Church. She completed a nursing diploma and post-graduate maternity nursing certificate in 1955, during which time she met and fell in love with Sterling, whom she married the following year. While raising her family, Jean managed a very successful home-based business and later returned to maternity nursing once her three daughters were grown. She fulfilled this passion until she and Sterling retired to pursue their love for RV travel. Together they enjoyed many years travelling across Canada and the US, making their way to Florida each fall as ‘snowbirds’ and spending the winter months with friends from many parts of North America. In 2006, they began another exciting new chapter in their lives, relocating permanently to White Rock, BC to be closer to grandchildren and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and where Jean also made many new friends in the local community and church.

Sterling and family wish to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful care team on the Oasis Community at The Terraces, Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care, White Rock, BC, and to all those who have blessed Jean with friendship, comfort and support throughout the final chapter of her life.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of Jean’s life will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in honour of Jean may be made to the BC Alzheimer’s Society or the Evergreen Baptist Care Society.

From: Carol and Terry Hilborn
Relation: My husband and Jean were residents on 5th floor of The Terraces at Evergreen

My deepest condolences to Stirling and family on their loss. My husband, Terry and I met Jean 9 months ago when my husband became a resident in The Terraces. The first thing I noticed about Jean was her warm smile which lit up every time Stirling arrived. Stirling and Jean danced so beautifully together at the musical afternoon get-togethers. I always made a point of spending time with her when I came to visit my husband and enjoyed our times together. One day she noticed my hands were cold and she gently held them throughout the visit until they were toasty and warm. I was touched and when I think of her … I smile.

Dear Sterling, (and family),
We were sorry to hear of Jean’s passing❤️
She was one of the first people in Stratford Gardens to welcome us when we moved in 10 years ago! She had such a caring heart and loved to help others.
We understand that the last few years have been challenging for you all at times. Jean is now in heaven, at peace and probably feeding the multitudes❣️❣️❣️Jody & Kerbey

Relation: Neighbour at Stratford Gardens

My sympathies to you Sterling and family. Jean was the first neighbour I met when I moved to Stratford Gardens. Fond memory of taking her to Guildford. I miss her knocking on my door with kindness.
Another bright star in Heaven, Laura Baur

Relation: Family of fellow Resident at Evergreen

Sterling and family: My sister Chris, my Dad and I send our deepest condolences to you all. We came to know Jean as our Dad is also on Oasis at Evergreen. Jean was the first resident we met the day we took Dad (George) to his new home in June 2019. We loved her instantly as she reminded us so much of our own mom, Jeanne who passed in 2005. Dad and I would often walk the floor and if Jean’s door was open we would stop by to say hello and chat. She was such a special lady and we will miss her and her lovely smile. Know we are thinking of you and sending healing hugs. RIP dear Jean.

Relation: We lived in the same condominium

I was saddened to hear of Jean’s death but relieved for both her and Sterling that she is now at peace.
The first time that I met Jean was in the lobby of building 1 at Stratford Gardens. not long after moving there.
She was picking up Campbell Soup Labels. I bumped into her many times after that and enjoyed our conversations. I also met both Sterling and Jean in the underground parking garage and had many laughs down there. I can see from the obituary that they enjoyed a long and happy marriage together, helping others along the way. I am glad to have known her.
