Johanna Vander Spoel (Jakobs)

June 28, 1932 - November 23, 2020

Tribute

Johanna was born on June 28, 1932 to Gert and Gertken Jakobs, in the farming
community of Wielen, Germany.
She immigrated to Canada with her fiancé Gerhard Vander Spoel in the spring of
1953. Initially, they settled in Edmonton, where they married on the 27th of
December, the day of Gerhard’s 21st birthday. In the fall of 1954, they moved to the
Fraser Valley, eventually purchasing a dairy farm in the Mt. Lehman area in 1959. A
few years later, in 1966, they moved to a larger dairy farm in Sumas Prairie. They
lived there until they retired from farming.
Johanna often worked side by side with Gerhard on the farms, while maintaining a
large vegetable garden. She was also one of the founders, with Gerhard, of the Bibles
for Missions Thrift Store in Abbotsford. She was one of the longest-serving
volunteers until she was no longer able to continue to serve. She went bowling for
many years. She especially loved to spend time caring for her garden flowers.
Johanna’s last years were spent in the Tabor Home, where she was lovingly cared
for by the staff until her final moments, on November 23, 2020.
Johanna was predeceased by her husband Gerhard, after more than 61 years of
marriage, on April 17, 2015, and by her grandson Kevin (Kristine) Doppenberg on
September 8, 2018.
She is survived by her five children: John Vander Spoel; Grace (Matthew) Stolk;
Gordon (Anita) Vander Spoel; Diana (John) Doppenberg; and David (Jenny) Vander
Spoel; 12 grandchildren: David (Jessica) Stolk; Jeffrey Stolk; Darryl (Amber) Stolk;
Christine (Brandon) Gross; Melissa Vander Spoel; Laura Vander Spoel; Bryan
Doppenberg; Karin (Brent) Hoogland; Nathan (Danielle) Doppenberg; Jason
(Mandy) Doppenberg; Derin (Laura) Vander Spoel; Kirsten (Dylan) Renpenning; and
