Tribute
Rev. Johannes August Rattel passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 5, 2021. He was born on the island of Tol, Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia on June 8, 1936 to missionary parents Berta and Johann Rattel. He went to school in Kupferzell, Germany. He first trained as an electrician. In 1960 God called him to the ministry and he attended the Liebenzell Mission Seminary. In 1965 he married Margarette née Ortlieb. In 1966 the Mission sent him to minister to the German diaspora in Toronto, Canada where he was instrumental in the founding of the Deutsche Evangelische Missions-Gemeinde/Willowdale Evangelical Church. From 1971 to 1981 he was the pastor of the Martin Luther Church in Kitchener, OT. From 1982 to his retirement in 2004, he was the pastor of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Maple Ridge BC. In 1979 he received his Honours BA in Religion and Culture from Wilfred Laurier University and in 1987 his MA from the University of British Columbia.
He will be missed by his wife of 56 years, Margarete; his Daughter Christa (Greg); his son Tim (Ernest); his grandchildren Talisa (Joel), Thomas (Hilary), Taryn (Isaac), and one great granddaughter; and by his siblings Elisabeth, Heinrich, and Traugott. He is predeceased by his sister Lydia.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 10:00 AM at King Road Church in Abbotsford with Pastor Heins Schartner officiating. Burial will follow at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery in Abbotsford.
