Lon James Mitchell

July 11, 1949 - August 7, 2025

Tribute

Lon, born in Chilliwack, BC, was the cherished only child of Don and Fran Mitchell. His  adventurous childhood in and around the Chilliwack area allowed him to make and maintain many lifelong friendships.

Lon graduated from Sardis Secondary school in 1968. Within the following year he became a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and was stationed in Manitoba.  Upon his return to his beloved British Columbia, Lon began his career in the corrections field,  working with youth outward bound and restorative justice programs. This career path led to countless adventures and moves to  Cranbrook, Ontario and back to BC. Lon  was an exemplary leader, mentor and friend to many colleagues throughout the country.

In 1975 Lon met the love of his life, Dianne (Kibsey). Lon and Dianne wed in 1976 and the two shared 49 years of marriage, friendship and love. They welcomed three children, Adam, Jamie and Kelsey, who all treasured their father deeply. His family expanded again with the addition of daughter ‘#3’ Rachel and grandson Wyatt James.

Lon was a man who savored and lived life boldly. His love of family, friends and a passion for running and the outdoors led to a rich life of 76 years. He was a man who valued knowledge, learning new skills and hobbies and experiencing travel. He constantly challenged himself and persevered leading to inevitable success in whatever he pursued. His dedication to personal growth and excellence was inspiring to all around him.

Lon will be dearly missed by extended family, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues.  We ask that his life be remembered for the way he lived it… With love, an adventurous spirit, commitment, determination, and courage.

Thank you to Doctors Kroeker, Salter, Hirst, Bright, and community nurse Derouin.  A special thank you to the incredible home support team and CGH hospital nursing team who provided Lon with compassionate and dignified care for so many years.

A celebration of life to honour Lon will be held on September 7th , 2025, at 1:00pm at the Chilliwack Curling Club at 45550 Spadina Ave, Chilliwack, BC.

In tribute to Lon and his love for running, we ask that everyone wear their favourite running shoes to the celebration.
