Margaret Dueck (Rempel)
May 10, 1928 - December 14, 2025
Tribute
Margaret Dueck was born in Osterwick, Ukraine on May 10, 1928. She was the first child born to Henry and Margareta Rempel. One more sibling (Helen) would follow.
In 1943 the family fled along with most of her village to Germany due to the approaching Soviet armies. They traveled by cattle train through Poland and on to Germany. In 1948 they landed in a Mennonite refugee camp in Gronau, Germany. Here she met her husband to be, Peter Dueck, also a refugee from Ukraine. They were married in Germany on July 29, 1951.
Since returning to Ukraine was not possible, and Germany was in ruins, they joined a group of fellow refugees to start a new life in Uruguay. They took the 3 week voyage to Uruguay by ship. There they lived a pioneer lifestyle and survived by applying the traditional Mennonite values of simplicity, hard work and co-operation. They lived and worked six difficult years in Uruguay. During their time in Uruguay two sons were born. George in 1953 and Henry in 1954.
In August 1957 the family emigrated to Canada. They settled in Greendale in order to be close to Margaret’s parents and extended family. Walter was subsequently born in 1960. Mom and Dad joined the Greendale MB Church where they enjoyed many years of fellowship and blessings.
Mom maintained a quiet resolute faith in God through the hard times and the good times. She was a woman of much love and compassion who worked hard to feed and nurture her family. When we were children she would milk the cow every day and tend to her garden. Summers were always spent in the raspberry patch. Mom spent many hours in her favorite chair crocheting hundreds (possibly thousands) of pot holders and other crochet projects for family and friends. Dad and Mom both faithfully provided for their family.
God called Mom home on December 14, 2025. Life here will never be the same without her. Mom was so loved and will be immensely missed by her family and friends.
