Marlene Hensel

February 9, 1948 - May 13, 2026

Tribute

Marlene Hensel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and dear Friend, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on May 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Marlene was born on February 9, 1948, in Markbronn, Germany, to Helene and Michael Klippe. She shared her early years with her older sister Karen. At six months old, Marlene immigrated to Canada with her family, settling in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where she spent much of her childhood. At the age of 13, Marlene accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized — a faith that would remain the foundation of her life.

When she was 17, her family moved to Calgary, and she graduated from grade 12. There she met the love of her life, Rudolph Hensel. They were married on March 25, 1967, beginning a beautiful and devoted marriage that lasted 59 years. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, love, and service.

At the age of 20, Marlene welcomed her first child, a daughter, Ramona. Two years later, the family moved to Vancouver, where Marlene worked as a property manager maintaining apartment buildings while creating a warm and loving home for her family. At age 23, she gave birth to her son Christopher, and later, at age 33, welcomed her youngest son, Jonathan.

Marlene was a gifted homemaker and known for her talent in the kitchen; meals at Marlene’s house were always something to look forward to. She had a generous spirit and servant’s heart. She was deeply involved in her church and community, willing to host, and volunteering for many organizations like the crisis pregnancy centre and faithfully supporting her husband in his construction business. Music/singing, hospitality, travel, reading, gardening and caring for others were enduring passions throughout her life.

Later in life, Marlene worked tirelessly to reconnect her family with relatives in Ukraine and Russia. Through her determination, loyalty, and love, she was able to restore meaningful relationships and strengthen family bonds across generations and continents.

Marlene was richly blessed with a loving daughter-in-law, son-in-law, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren — including one precious new addition expected in October, which she joyfully announced with great delight.

Marlene will be remembered for her unwavering faith, compassionate heart, and deep love for her family, many of her kids’ friends called her mom. She was the life of the party and had a terrific sense of humour.  Her life was a testimony of devotion, kindness, and grace, always available. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in all who knew her.

From: Coni Christo
Relation: Family friend

It was a sad day when Marlene let me know of her illness, and how she was trusting Jesus to carry her through this journey. Our friendship goes back to the early 1950’s when my parents and I immigrated to Canada from Germany. The Klippe’s and the Richter’s had a lasting friendship, and I would bet my parents, Paul and Christel, have greeted her in Heaven with open arms. May you feel God’s amazing love, peace and comfort during this difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers Rudy, Ramona, Chris and Jonathan, and your beautiful family.
Coni (Richter) Christo and Gisela (Richter) Mullan
