Michael Stewart

June 17, 1959 - August 2, 2016

Tribute

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that Mike has left us to join his mother Ellen in Heaven to be with their Lord. Born June 17, 1959 in Kelowna, B.C. to Ellen and Gerry Stewart, Mike grew up the oldest of seven siblings. A good student and an accomplished athlete, he graduated with honours from Immaculata High School in 1977. He studied at UBC and went on to UVIC where he received a degree in Education. He started his teaching career in Terrance, B.C. and then moved to Chilliwack where he was a middle school math teacher for over 24 years. A passionate competitor, especially on the golf course, Mike played by the rules and always played to win. Mike was able to share his love of sports with his students by volunteering to coach the school’s golf team, volleyball team and ski teams. He is survived by his son Brett Michael Stewart and daughter Ami Kendall Rempel (Graham), his father Gerry Stewart and his six brothers and sisters: Tami Johnson, Pat Stewart, Brenda Ganley, Sandra McKee, Todd Stewart and Pam Paulhus and numerous nieces and nephews. His family would like to offer a special thank you to his colleagues at Vedder Middle School and the staff in ICU at Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their care and support. A funeral mass will be held at St. Charles Garnier Parish in Kelowna, on Friday, August 12 at 11am. Mike will be interred beside his mother at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at Vedder Middle School in Chilliwack on Friday, September 9 at 4pm. Please share your memories and stories with his family in the online guestbook. www.wiebeandjeskefh.com.  In lieu of flowers, please consider performing a random act of kindness in Mike’s memory.

It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. Thinking of Mike’s family at this sad time! I have worked with Mike at Vedder Middle School for the past 15 years. Mike would always make his famous cheese crackers for the staff but I would always find my very own supply on my desk in the office. Whenever we would have a revised bell schedule, if we were a second late from manually ringing the bell, Mike would be the first one on our intercom reminding us to do so. He will be missed!! Take care Mike, I hope you find peace and comfort in the heavens above!!! Hugs, Jodi

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Stewart family. “Stewey” and I go way back – elementary & high school ( & beyond !! ). He was an amazing guy with an infectious laugh and an impish grin. He teased the heck out of me and I loved every minute of it. You will be terribly missed my friend but your memory will live on forever in our hearts. May God envelope you and keep you safe. Relation: My math teacher this year

Mr.Stewart was an amazing teacher. He helped me a lot in math and science this year and always had a smile on his face. When our class could tell that he wasn’t feeling as well as he usually feels our hearts sunk as he was such an amazing teacher. He always had a smile on his face and his laugh was the type of laugh that would make everyone else laugh too as if it was contagious. Knowing that when I go back to VMS in the fall and am not gonna see him there breaks my heart and I just want everyone to know that Mr.Stewart was the best teacher I have ever had and my favourite teacher by far. I’ll always remembe rMike as one of 4 lads who hung around together. My son David, Ron, John and Mike. They had many good times together and were able to keep their annual Golf Championship going for many years. Mike always had a big smile and I recall his Christmas Santa oufit,a bright red coverall. H e wore it when they went out spreading Christmas Cheer. I’m so sad to hear that he has left us. Diane Davies

Dear Stewart Family,

It is with a vary heavy heart that I send you all my condolences for Mike. I am so sorry for your loss and may the Lord guide you in your time of sorrow.
Know that Mike touched so many lives throughout his teaching career. Teaching is a very demanding, challenging profession and Mike diligently served for many years .He opened up new worlds for so many of his students. He is to be commended for that.
Mike was always rather happy and a joy to be around as a kid growing up at up your house.. He was always teasing me in a joking fashion and called me Peaches.. I always remember Mike swimming underwater and holding his breath for numerous laps. Mike was a solid big brother and just a good guy.. He was a good friend to me .
Know that my family and I extend the most heartfelt condolences to all the Stewart family. I know he is happy and probably playing golf in heaven with Ellen. Rest in Peace MIke.
Take good care Gerry, Tami, Pat, Brenda, Sandra, Todd and Pam. Know that all of you are in my prayers.. Love you, Peggy Sullivan
