Miriam Joy Powles

April 19, 1957 - October 11, 2017

Tribute

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the passing of a dear sister, aunt, and friend, Miriam Joy. She passed away on October 11, 2017, surrounded by family members and the loving staff at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC.

Miriam Joy was courageous in her battle with cancer over the past eight years and taught us how to face life and its struggles with hope and faith. She drew great strength from her family, dear friends, and her faith in a loving heavenly Father.  Miriam Joy is survived by her two sisters, Ruth (Barry) Borthistle, Marylynne (Conrad) Wiebe, and her two brothers, Brien (Elaine) Powles, and Allen (Suzanne) Powles, and by a host of loving nieces and nephews.  Another part of Miriam’s legacy includes her dear friends who have faithfully stood by her side over these years. We are so grateful for each one of them.

We are deeply thankful for the love and support of the Christine Morrison Hospice, who gently and lovingly supported Miriam in her last weeks. We would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations in Miriam’s memory be made to the Mission Hospice Society in Mission, BC. Donations can be made online at http://www.missionhospice.bc.ca/.

Miriam was a wonderful roommate in my apartment of 6 girls at Trinity Western College in 1977-1978. I really was thankful for her! She was a gift to us then, and over the years when I would see her occasionally at events in Abbotsford. She was a very strong lady in her fight for health and her faith in the Lord despite very difficult circumstances.

Today we are saddened to hear of the passing of Miriam and wish to express our most sincere condolences to her family. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and supported her.

Miriam was a good friend and supportive colleague during my years at Abby Middle and I have many happy memories of the LST get-togethers hosted by Miriam. Sending my condolences and prayers to her family and friends.

From: Brooks & Mariane Glett
Relation: She was one of my first friends when I immigrated to Canada in 1980.

We are so saddened about Miriam’s passing, but we rejoice that she is with Jesus and that we will definitely see her again. I have known Miriam for 35 years, and she has been one of my most faithful friends, always encouraging, loving, praying and supporting. She visited us in the UAE in 2009, the year she was diagnosed with cancer. We’re including a few pictures of the wonderful memories we have from that time. Brooks, Mariane, Micah and Sarah Glett

To Allen and Suzanne,

I just read about your sister’s passing on Joanne Engler’s Facebook post. Lives intertwine in many different ways. Sending you condolences!

Mir was a great friend and thoughtful. We would spend Monday’s watching football when it worked. Miss you my friend and condolences to the family. I just heard otherwise I would have been at the service.

Miriam Powles was my teacher, but I really got to know and appreciate her as my volleyball coach. My friend and I often drove in her car to games and we got to know her great sense of humour and what a warm and friendly person she was. I was fortunate to bump into her occasionally after high school and it was always lovely to see Coach Powles. Sending my prayers to her family and friends.

Dear siblings of Mim and extended family,
Mim was older than me and I always admired her from afar. Her zest and love of life was admirable. My all time favourite memory of her: she was playing the piano for a recital in Miller Chapel and messed up–badly. She tried to re-start and recover but she got to the same spot and again faltered. In despair she threw her hands up in the air, stood up, took a bow and laughed her way off the stage. It was classic and I still smile just thinking about it. My prayers have been with you during these difficult days and I trust that you will experience God’s comfort as you move forward without Mim here on earth.
