Norman Bartel
May 5, 1929 - May 31, 2020
Tribute
It is with very sad hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Norman Bartel at the age of 91. With great joy he now is with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Leaving to mourn his passing is his loving wife of 67 years, Mary, three daughters, Debi (Randy Derksen), Bev (Stephen Solomon), Lisa (Timothy Gareau), and seven wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by one sibling, a sister, Rosella living in Saskatoon, and two sisters-in-law, and a brother- in –law. Also, he will be fondly remembered by many nephews and nieces, friends and family.
Norman was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan on May 5, 1929, to Peter and Carrie Bartel, fourth of seven children. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant sister, brothers, Elmer, Johnny, Roy, and sister Esther. Norman grew up in Waldheim, graduating from high school, and especially enjoying wood working, doing amazing work even at a young age!
He committed his life to the Lord at 17 during a revival that influenced the town greatly. His passion from then on was to become involved in missions, spreading the Good News of the life-changing Gospel! After High School he attended Briercrest Bible College, Teacher’s College, married the love of his life, Mary Giesbrecht, July 22, 1953, and together they went on to teach in Mexico. Then, back to College. He had a remarkable life of ministry, from helping on his dad’s farm, to a teaching career, and taking on pastorates in Oklahoma, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg, and serving on denominational Boards. In his memoirs, written in his retirement, he concluded with the verse “The Lord has done great things for us; therefore, we are filled with joy!” Ps. 126:3
More than all this, Norman was an amazing husband, loving dad, and grandpa. He loved his family, enjoyed travelling, and camping out. In retirement, Norman and Mary spent 5 months of the year living in South Texas where they were involved as spiritual directors. In 2003 the move from Winnipeg to Abbotsford was also a good decision as they made many new friends in their new home.
The family expresses a heartfelt thanks to Tabor Home where, for a number of years, he received compassionate care for his Alzheimer’s condition.
A small family service will be held, with plans for a Celebration of Life service at a later date.
Donations in Norm’s memory can be made to The Gideon’s Bible Society.
