Otto ((Wally)) Wallace Guggenheimer
August 20, 1941 - November 18, 2016
Tribute
Our brother Wally passed away peacefully on Friday November 18, 2016 in Menno Hospital, Abbotsford, after suffering with Huntington Disease for more than half of his 75 years. Wally was born on August 20, 1941 at North Otter, Langley BC, second child to Otto and Meta (Friedrich) Guggenheimer. Now re-united with his parents in heaven, he is missed by his siblings: Rita (Rudy) Nickel of Abbotsford, John (Sally) of Abbotsford, Paul (Connie) of Prince George, Meta (Reinart) Polinsky of Vancouver, Ruth (Isaac) Klassen of Kelowna, Dan (Lovella) of Saskatoon, Arlene (Waldo) Pauls of Clarendon/Shawville QC, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and friends. In his youth Wally was a very widely read and knowledgeable scholar, and in demand as a softball fast-pitcher. After graduating from Mennonite Educational Institute, he worked in metal fabrication in Burnaby, studied engineering at UBC, worked at Columbia Cellulose Pulp Mill in Prince Rupert, where he enjoyed owning and driving powerful sporty cars, until HD prevented him from continuing. Wally spent the last 18 years of his life at Menno Place, where he quickly became quiz champion and general knowledge expert. The family would like to express their gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the wonderful staff at Menno Place, especially Hospital East 1, and by Dr David Froese and Dr Ernie Pauls. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations can be made in Wally’s memory to the Huntington Society of Canada (Guggenheimer Family Fund), website: www.huntingtonsociety.ca, or by cheque mailed to HSC, 151 Frederick Street, Suite 400, Kitchener ON 2H2M2. Donations will be applied to research into funding treatment and cure for HD, and to support sufferers of HD

From: Susan Tolley
Relation: director HSC BC HD Resource Centre and UBC Centre for HD team member
I fondly remember Wally at the HSC Retreat (in Squamish). Wally loved to throw a football so we got him a nerf football so he could throw passes to other retreat participants and no one got hurt. He loved the pool basketball and everyone was happy to be his teammate. Most of all I remember his HUGE smile and generous heart. He was kind and loving to everyone. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the service I am traveling out of the country tomorrow till mid December. I will keep Wally in my prayers. Condolences to all the family. You are all in my thoughts as well. Be gentle with yourselves in the coming days, weeks and months. Sincerely Susan Tolley

Wally’s joy and freedom from the prison of his body in the presence of Jesus must be unimaginable. It’s always sad to lose a loved one, but in Wally’s case the blessing to him is so much greater than the loss. “…he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces…” Isaiah 25:8a
