Peter Braun

December 10, 1951 - September 28, 2016

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend.  Our hearts are broken knowing that you are gone, and we will miss you more than words can say. Peter Braun passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 28, 2016 after a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer.  Left behind is his wife of 32 years, Doris.  His daughter Michelle and her husband Phillip, his son Peter Jr and his wife Michelle along with his granddaughter Hayleigh.   Also his 2 sisters Helen and her husband George and his sister Anna and her husband Warner (along with their families).  Peter was predeceased by his parents Ernst and Maria and his two brothers John and Henry.

Peter was born in Paraguay on December 10, 1951 and immigrated to Winnipeg Manitoba with his parents and siblings in 1960.  Pete attended Schoenhurst Elementary for 2 years.  With no work available Ernst once again moved his family,  this time to Vancouver BC in February 1962.  Pete attended John Oliver Secondary School, then decided to not finish school and instead get a job at Auto Marine Electric in 1970, where he worked for the next 16 years.  This is also where he met the love of his life Doris.

Doris talked Pete into coaching the company baseball team and this is when they fell madly in love in 1975.  Pete was active and loved playing softball as well as fishing with his parents at the lake with the rest of the family.  He valued his time spent with his family at gatherings and celebrations.

Doris and Pete lived in a small apartment in Vancouver and had their daughter Michelle in 1980.  They then decided to move to Kamloops in 1984, then got married shortly after.  Then along came Peter Jr in 1985.

Pete worked for Canadian National Railway, first as a seasonal maintenance guy and then transferred over to transportation where he started as a yard worker and brakeman, then moving up to a conductor and engineer.  Pete worked for CN for 30 years until March 2016 when his health started failing him.  He was diagnosed with lung cancer.   Then in July Pete found out the cancer had spread.   He was admitted to hospital in September and never came out.

We will miss him forever but it helps knowing he is no longer in pain and looking down on us from  heaven.

I met Peter when I worked at Auto Marine Electric in 1970/71. My brother-in-law, Gary Giesbrecht worked there at the same time. Through Peter and Gary, I met a number of other friends. Peter and I, as well as Pete Derksen shared a little bond in that Peter was born on December 10th, I was born on December 11th and Pete Derksen was born on December 12th. During the summer months, I remember many great parties held in the Braun’s garage on weekends.

Fast forward 45 years. In June or July of 2015, Annemarie and I were traveling to the 100 Mile House area where we keep our travel trailer. We always stop at Boston Bar to fuel up. Annemarie had gone into the store at the service station to purchase two coffees. She couldn’t help but hear a man’s voice at the counter. She thought, “I know that voice.” She turned around and said, “Peter?” Yes, it was Peter.

His C.N. train had stopped at Boston Bar and Peter had walked the few steps to the service station for a coffee. Peter walked out to where I was fueling up my truck. I turned and saw an old friend coming my way. “Peter!!! We talked about old times, new times and it felt like 45 years melted away instantly. The train whistle blew, and as fast as Peter came, he was gone again.

Reading of Peter’s passing brought a flood of good memories back. They are probably some of the best memories of my life.

Our sincerest condolences to Doris and her family at this sad time.
