Thomas Pimblett

February 16, 1923 - January 21, 2023

Tribute

Tom Pimblett, of Abbotsford, BC passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023, just four weeks shy of

his 100th birthday. Thomas was born in 1923 on a farm in Essex, England to John and Agnes (Stewart)

Pimblett. After spending his youth on the farm he studied at Kings College in London, obtaining his

medical degree in 1949. After graduation, and spending time in Libya and Egypt with the RAMC, he

began his medical career in anaesthesia, working at several hospitals in England. While working at a

hospital in Nottingham he met his future wife, Betty Payn. They were married in 1956 and enjoyed 54

years of marriage until her passing in 2010. After having a son, Nigel, in 1957 they made the decision

to emigrate to Canada the following year. Living first in Newfoundland, where a second son, Brian,

was born, they then moved on to Saskatchewan in 1961 and Alberta in 1971 before retiring to BC in

  1. Throughout his working life Tom always set aside time for family, enjoying many weekend

outings skating, swimming, tobogganing, or just visiting the mall. In retirement he and Betty were

able to enjoy a number of cruises, his favourite being a trip through the Panama Canal. He was also

able to spend more time with one of his favourite hobbies, researching his English and Scottish

ancestry, and was an active member of the Abbotsford Genealogical Society for a number of years. He

never lost touch with his British roots, staying in touch with family, going back to the UK a number of

times, and keeping up to date on the football and cricket results from “the old country”.

Thomas was predeceased by his father John, his mother Agnes, brothers John, Bill, and Jim, sister

Betty, son Brian, and daughter-in-law Meredith. His memory lives on with his son Nigel (Tobi),

grandchildren Nathaniel (Maggie), Petra, Brigid, Grace (Corey), Sarah, and Emma, great

granddaughter Pippa, and daughter-in-law Luanne.

Although he fell just shy of the century, he had a very good innings, for which his family is ever so

grateful. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, meeting at Grace

Church located at 2087 McMillan Road, Abbotsford, on Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at 1:00 pm.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Wiebe and Jeske Funeral Home Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Melody Goetz
Relation: Staff when he lived at Hallmark Retirement Communities

Tom was a resident at Hallmark Retirement Community when I was a staff there. I remember him most from a life-writing workshop – how he elegantly and care-fully shared stories with us all. Life had asked alot of him, and he sought to meet what came with compassion and love. He was an eloquent writer, and a thinker – I remember also him sharing with us how, in his youth, he had been able to write with left and right hand at the same time – starting at a central point and writing outwards, so that the sentence on one side was mirrored on the other!). A gifted soul, to be sure; I am grateful to have met him, and wish his family every good…

From: Kathy McKinnon
Relation: Worked at Hallmark where Tom resided

I worked at Hallmark for a short time and had the greatest pleasure of knowing Tom. He would love to share stories of his growing up and stories from the war. Tom was such a kind soul and a loving man. It was an honour knowing Tom. My deepest condolences to his family. May you rest in peace dear friend.
