James ((Jim)) Baerg

July 10, 1944 - November 17, 2016

Tribute

James Michael Baerg, late of Abbotsford, passed away on November 17th with family at his side. “Jim” was born on the 10th of July 1944 in North Vancouver, B.C., to the late Isaac and Elsie (Bergmann) Baerg. In 1946 the family moved to Abbotsford where Ike built I.M. Baerg’s Service on the corner of Huntingdon and Emerson (Gladwin) Roads. South Abbotsford Church was the family’s home church and it is there that Jim, at the age of 6, accepted Jesus as his Saviour with whom Jim enjoyed a lifelong relationship. His education included attending South Poplar Elementary, MEI, Hepburn Bible School, Columbia Bible College (MBBI), Simon Fraser University and Tabor College in Kansas. In 1966 he married Joan Martens and was happy to be able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on July 28th, 2016. His work as a probation officer took them to Prince Rupert, Williams Lake, Surrey, and Kelowna. They also took a two year MCC teaching assignment in Jamaica and spent 6 years with Youth for Christ in Williams Lake. After retirement to Abbotsford Jim enjoyed his volunteer work at the Mennonite Historical Society. Predeceased by his parents, Jim is survived by his wife Joan and their children Kim Baerg (Bruce Campbell), Karleen (Ken) Kantymir, Terry (Jade) Baerg, and Trevlyn (Liz) Baerg, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons, as well as 3 brothers, Tom (Lucy), Stan (Eileen) and Allan. Visitation on Friday, Nov. 25, from 7pm – 8pm and Memorial Service on Sat., Nov. 26, at 2 pm. Both services will be held at the South Abbotsford Church, 32424 Huntingdon Road, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Mennonite Historical Society or MCC.

Our most sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jim. My favorite memories of Jim are the Christmas family gatherings we used to have at the South Abbotsford Church when we were all much younger. Besides all the great food and seeing the relatives again, I most fondly recall the floor hockey we used to play. Jim and his brothers would always get right in there, along with many others, and make it an enjoyable time for us younger guys. Just a small thing, but a good memory for me. I’m sure that he is being surrounded warmly by our loved ones that have gone on before him. Thanks Jim. Dan & Heather Bergmann. 83 Mile ,B.C.

My condolences to Jim’s entire family, including his probation family. I worked with Jim as a probation officer in Williams Lake, and then again I reconnected with him when he worked in Kelowna. Jim knew how to fly a flag, and his office was adorned with flags from around the world. He had stories for how he obtained some of those flags. I am sorry for his loss, there are many who will mourn his passing.
With greatest sympathy,
Emmy

So surprised to see that Jim passed away, but happy in the thought that he is resting in peace. We knew him at MEI, of course, but cherish the memories of our time together in Jamaica. Blessings and grace to you as you go through this time of mourning.

Thanks for allowing us into your life in the last days of Jim’s life here on earth. We got to know each other in the two years we lived in Jamaica. We sure enjoyed each others company and would get together as much as we could to “bear each others burdens and joys” in the “land we loved, Jamaica.” Trusting God will meet your needs in the lonely times as you learn to adjust to life without Jim.
Love, Ernie and Fritz
